Walking my Dog

“Walking my Dog” (2023) shows Jorge Blanco’s masterful command of movement. The blue half-moon man, a callback to the “Castaway” character of his early comic series, is a clever everyman, the perennial protagonist of much of his work. Here Blanco demonstrates the beauty in the mundane, as a simple outing with a black dog uses his stark colors and crisp angles to suggest the wag of the tail, the sudden pull on the leash, and the beautifully delicate lift of the man’s foot as he strives to keep up with his canine companion. Little details like the use of empty space to create the ear of the animal showcases Blanco’s genius at seeing everyday objects and beings in strong metallic form.
