“Vertical Tennis Players” (2021) shares many similarities with Jorge Blanco’s later work “Running Wild.” Blanco’s appreciation of sports goes all the way back to childhood, infusing his art with verve and energy. The moon-faced figures with their dynamic poses duplicated over and over are all different colors, with three different background colors between them. The two constants are the black circles for their eyes, and the yellow circles that indicate the tennis balls they are about to strike. The body posture suggests the seconds before the impact in an overhand serve, with the rainbow of colors indicative of a bright, clear day, with people from all walks of life enjoying the sport together.
