“Underwater Series” (1980-present) is an ongoing exploration of Jorge Blanco, dealing with one of his favorite subjects: El Mar. Prior to developing his famous comic “The Castaway,” much of Blanco’s work was darker, moodier, and influenced by the political climate of his birth country and the terrorism and turmoil that struck throughout Europe in the 1970s. In 1979 his accomplishments as an illustrator for children’s books led him to become the Creative Director of the Museo de los Niños in Caracas. It was this, coupled with the birth of first child, that shifted Blanco towards brighter colors, more whimsical imagery, and more humorous themes. These pieces, still with a signature Jorge Blanco look, are simultaneously more colorful and darker than his usual work, and each one portrays man outside of his element, attempting to connect with marine life. In a myriad background of blues, a lone scuba diver usually appears, surrounded by gentle giants. Occasionally his famous half-moon faced comic protagonist makes an appearance, too. His love for nature is evident, and the fascination with the sea that led him to first create “The Castaway” has carried him through all the chapters of his artistic life, continually bringing joy to his viewers.
