“Mini Fire Fish” (2016) harkens back to the earlier “Blue Fish” sculpture created by Jorge Blanco in the early 1990s. This newer work plays with shape and form by using the curve to suggest a salmon in the midst of leaping, the tail bracing for impact, the fins swooping back while also emulating a blazing flame. Blanco’s appreciation for nature is ever-present in his work, and his desire to show fluidity takes on multiple meanings when he is inspired by marine life. The red color, often associated with aggression and determination, indicates an indomitable will, no matter how tiny the tuna.
