Lido

“Lido” (2018) is one of Jorge Blanco’s greatest tributes to his adopted home of Sarasota, Florida. Lido Key was the first connected island on the suncoast, with the John Ringling Causeway opening travel to it from the city. It also opened up the larger Longboat Key directly north of it and Siesta Key to the south, and all three Keys are known for some of the best beaches in the entire world. The open space around the red circle implies the infinite timelessness of island life, with the taller piece of the sculpture like spreading wings and the opposite piece like the legs of a small animal cavorting through the sand. Blanco’s abstract masterpiece uses simple yet striking shapes and colors to convey the moment of sunset on a beach, as the glowing red ball of the sun descends on another day in paradise.
