“Acrobats” (2004) is from Jorge Blanco’s early days in Sarasota, Florida. Inspired by the circus history of the Gulf Coast city, this piece uses a different subject than his usual moon-faced man. It also is one of the most stunning examples of Blanco’s expertise when it comes to suggesting movement, as the character goes from upright to upside down with a leaning variant in between. By keeping the two side figures in yellow and the middle in red, it further indicates movement as the colors shift from the cautionary yellow to the dynamism of red and back again. The wide eye of the character and the way his face always turns the same way also implies the direction he travels, brilliantly leading our eyes over the sculpture in just the manner the artist envisions.
