“The Canoe” (2016) uses Jorge Blanco’s moon-faced subject within another piece, his head emerging from the opening of a beautifully-rendered metal canoe. Supported on two thin rods attached to a base, it also suggests the shadow of the craft cast on the bottom of the river it travels. A simple series of evenly-spaced rivets along the boat’s hull indicates the immaculate construction of the vessel, and the figure inside looks heavenward, letting the waters take him where they may.
