“Octagon” (2000) is an early work by Jorge Blanco, a piece which captures movement in a stunning fashion. Inside the geometric shape is a figure represented through sharp lines, as if in the midst of being rolled along while trying to keep his footing. The head bears characteristics that would become regular fixtures of his sculpture, with a large empty space for the eye and the small nose protrusion with sharp chin below. Blanco’s majestic use of color is present as well, as the blue which usually represents calmness and clarity is used on such a dynamic form, suggesting a more zen fluidity than it would otherwise seem on first glance.
