Metal Moon II

“Metal Moon II” (2015) is one of Jorge Blanco’s most delightful sculptures. The moon has had a profound influence on his life’s work, with a dreamlike whimsy imbued in many of his pieces that adopt the half-full shape. This work incorporates more colors than usual, with multiple layers coalescing to represent a watermelon and black screws holding them in place signifying the seeds. The open space above, framed by the circle of green, ties in the theme of the moon, a playful conceptualization of “ripeness” or “fullness.” While Blanco usually sculpts abstract images of people and animals, his fruit and plant sculptures are just as inspiring, liable to whet one’s artistic appetite with their vibrancy and crisp shades.
