“Fish 17” (2017) continues Jorge Blanco’s mischievous exploration of movement and form, drawing inspiration from the sea. Having already created numerous sculptures of fish, this one reflects his ever-growing interest in the abstract and implied symmetry, as we see the traditional fish shape intersecting with another, splitting the piece in half. The red color reflects the power, aggression, and bloodiness of the fresh kill, and like the shark from Jaws rising from the depths these two creatures meet in the middle, with the bisected circle in the very center a symbol of the juncture between predator and prey, the cycle of life.
