“Fish” (2019) portrays another of Jorge Blanco’s favorite subjects. From the early days of his Castaway cartoon in El Diario de Caracas, Blanco’s love of nature is evident as his trademark moon-faced man lounges on a small desert island, often diving into the water and encountering a myriad of aquatic lifeforms. Using such simple colors to separate the form of the fish from the water and bubbles reflects his mastery of color theory, and his framing puts us up close and personal with the swimmer, incorporating that humorous touch Blanco is famous for.
